The essential oil is an extraction from the chamomile plant flowers, known as either a Roman or German type. It is extracted through steam distillation. The Roman type is called Athemis Nobillis and the German version is Matricaria chamomile. Because of their differences in composition, they at times have different health benefits, but most of the benefits are found from both.
Some of the properties of the German chamomile include alpha bisabold, bisaboloid oxide (both A & B), bisabolene oxide and chamazulene which is what lends it the anti-inflammatory ability as well as that deep blue color.
The Roman version contains some properties that include; Camphene, sabinene, alpha and beta pinene, myrcene and gamma terpienene. These make it a predominantly calming essential oil.
