Aromas and Psychotypes

The selection of our scents is not accidental. Subconsciously we choose perfumes or fragrances that are appropriate to our psyche due to deep psychological motivation. If the scent is selected for being fashionable or “like my friends,” it probably won’t be associated with you by other people. The fact is, the fragrances we like should be true to our own characteristics.

So, look at yourself!

Aromas that are sweet and harmonious are for people who are romantic, delicate, dreamy, good-natured, sweet, and perhaps somewhat egocentric. They are characterized by a platonic speculative attitude to life that causes others to want to guide and protect them.

Aromas of light characteristics are for people who are inhibited, waiting for a pleasant change in life, and perhaps wanting to evoke sympathy to their plight. For such a person, as a rule, corresponds with low energy.

Fresh aromas are attractive to people who consider life at the moment, to be difficult. The more intractable the problem, the more delicate and fresh scent the person chooses. The physiological motivation for a fresh aroma occurs in people wanting to uplift themselves and loved ones.

Green and sour aromas are harmonious to pragmatic and practical people — those who believe a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. They’re not going to get involved in the adventure, and a significant portion of their domestic life is characterized by such concepts as duty, loyalty, and responsibility.

Floral scents attract unhappy people. In particular, those who are dissatisfied with their appearance, financial situation, or position in the family or society. Surrendering to their situation, these people are likely to remain indifferent on the surface and to follow the principle of accepting what is; but inside, they maintain a glimmer of hope despite the outward appearance of acceptance.

The tart characteristics of scents are for strong and passionate people who love adventure and risks. They wouldn’t normally show timidity or caution, although exhaustion is sometimes inherent in them because of such a stimulating lifestyle.

Spicy aromas attract people for whom the basic premise is movement of life and good luck. Although usually such people do not always understand their motives.

Balsamic flavors are a favorite of logically minded people. These people interpret information, processing it with their own way of thinking, and make conclusions based only on their own beliefs and experience. They are usually closed minded people who are difficult to change.

Aromas of resin and wood are harmonious for people who live a contemplative, yet active life, driven by creativity and the desire for personal growth.

Bitter flavors are loved by prolific people with extraordinary abilities and talents. Such people do not like monotony and boredom and are able to work, preferably under pressure, rather than with relaxation and leisure. They are interested in recognition and fame.

Aromas of wet characteristics are for manifesting outrageous people. This psychotype meets egocentrism, mannerisms, sincere forgiveness of the sins of others and confidence only in what has already been.

The dry characteristics of scents are for people who are sociable, sincere, love to talk, and dramatic. The concept of time does not concern them, rather, such a person meets the criteria of the current fact and opinion, relevant to his social circle. They are usually very pleasant, sociable, and harmonious. They are easy to change.

Peppery aromas are liked by people who cannot live without loud music, lively conversation, and who have an outstanding temperament and a keen sense of self-worth. They are able to be deeply committed to a cause. In this case, the comfort and material well-being is a natural need, contributing to their intellectual and spiritual growth. They may also genuinely and selflessly want to help others.

Even though certain aromas suit specific psychotypes the interpretation of the fragrances can change based on the person’s psyche. For example, fear causes some acidity in the tart flavor, and a passionate desire gives tartness to the sweet flavor.

And what scents do YOU love?

Aromatherapy Applications Methods’ Guide

There are many different ways to use essential oils. In this article I consider only those methods for application of aromatherapy that you can use at home. The information is given as reference. There are other articles in more detail describing the different methods with corresponding recipes. Application methods of aromatherapy can be divided into three main groups, inhalation method, transdermal method, and for internal use.

PART I. INHALATION METHODS

Inhalation methods are related to the effects on the olfactory and respiratory systems. It quickly and gently changes the emotional and psychological state with the association of the aroma. The oil molecules can remain in the air for several minutes to several hours, depending on which essential oils and method is used.
1. Aroma Lamp
Application: The molecules of essential oil evaporate along with water in the air, aromatizing the room and are absorbed by the mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract. This method changes the emotional balance slowly and gently but continuously for a few hours, depending on the heating time of the water with the oil. Good to use to create a certain atmosphere. Often used at home for deodorizing and disinfecting the premises and as a means to change the emotional and psychological state…

PART II. TOPICAL METHODS

Topical methods of application of aromatherapy benefits are twofold. The essential oils are absorbed into the bloodstream, penetrating through skin and inhalation methods allow the vapor to be absorbed in the mucus membranes of the upper respiratory track. When planning topical use of citrus oils you need to keep in mind the phototoxicity of certain citrus oils.
1. Body massage, back and face
Application: Components of essential oils dissolved in an oil base penetrates the skin and the blood through the capillaries and spread throughout the body. They are absorbed into the mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract, increasing the effect of the essential oils. This treatment rapidly changes the condition and is very effective. The duration of exposure would be up to several hours. Interestingly, short-term superficial massage for 5-15 minutes is stimulating, and a long term 30 minutes deep tissue message is relaxing. Massaging the face and/or back is widely used in aromatherapy…

PART III. INTERNAL USE

I want to write about ingestion of essential oils. A number of sources caution against such use, but I, for example, find rose oil very helpful in solving my problems with the lability of the emotions. There are oils which are toxic and cannot be used internally. I will always include this information in the table with information about the oil. There are variations in the production of essential oil and it is highly recommended that you know the method of production of the oil, the type of plant that is used, temperatures, storage equipment, etc. The method of distillation using solvents, carbon dioxide or propylene glycol are not suitable for internal use. These would be oils like jasmine, frankincense, myrrh, etc., which could contain solvents due to the distillation method. Suitable oils are prepared by steam distillation or prepared by pressing, including many from the citrus family.
If you decide to take essential oil internally you must verify the product has been specifically labeled as safe for internal use. If you have a serious illness it is absolutely necessary to consult your physician before using essential oil internally. Women who are pregnant or nursing should not take essential oil internally. Those who suffer from arrhythmia, heart, kidney, liver or gastrointestinal disease, cannot take essential oil internally. Be sure to test for sensitivity before taking any essential oil internally…

a) A recipe with emulsifier
Application: Components of essential oils through the mucosa of the gastrointestinal tract enter the bloodstream and are carried throughout the body, affecting biochemical processes. The impact is gradual with an average degree of intensity when used with the emulsifier. Exposure to several hours. The course of treatment leads to the accumulation of the effect of essential oils. This procedure is recommended for persistent chronic psycho-neurological disorders.
Use: Essential oils that can be taken without fear are citrus, spices, mint, rosemary, chamomile, and geranium. Add 1-3 drops of essential oil to an emulsifier of 1 tablespoon of honey, a cube of refined sugar, 100-200 ml of kefir or yogurt or capsule wrapped in bread, Take 20-30 minutes before meals with a full glass of water. Course: take 1-3 times a day every day for the recommended period of 1 to 3 days or more, but not more than 21 days. During the course it is recommended to drink at least 2 liters of water per day. High dosages, up to 10 drops of treatment, must be carried out under medical supervision with periodic blood tests. A second course may be repeated after a month from last intake. No more than 6 courses of reception of essential oils internally per year.
b) Enrichment of tea
Application: This method is gradual and only slightly changes the state. The duration of exposure up to several hours. Good to drink enriched tea for decreased performance, mild forms of depression or neurosis, etc.
Use: Per 100 grams of dry tea leaves, add 10-20 drops of essential oil. Store in tightly closed glass or ceramic jar. Let stand for 7-14 days in the dark at room temperature. For greater effect, shake a few times a day for better infusion. Good oils would be peppermint and lemon, rosemary and citrus. Brewed as usual.
c) Aromatic water
Application: When administered the action of this essential oil method is only gradual and slightly changes the state. Drinking scented water can aid in correcting lung disorders.
Use: For internal use mix 0.5 liters of mineral water (without gas), or thawed purified filter water to 1-5 drops of essential oil. Before use it is mandatory to shake for 1-2 minutes. Drink in small portions 3-4 times a day. Store in the refrigerator. Shelf life: 1-2 days.

Aromatherapy Application Methods’ Guide. Part II. Topical methods.

The duration of exposure would be up to several hours. Interestingly, short-term superficial massage for 5-15 minutes is stimulating, and a long term 30 minutes deep tissue message is relaxing. Massaging the face and/or back is widely used in aromatherapy.
Use: Essential oils dissolved in a cosmetic or vegetable oil base or cream. The first massage is performed with the minimal dosage of essential oils using 10 ml of foundation to 1-3 drops of oil. You can increase the dose in the second and third sessions to 6-10 drops of all the basics for the massage throughout the session. It is best to prepare the mixture of essential oils just before the massage. You can prepare the massage base to use within a month by adding a natural preservative such as 5-10 drops of jojoba oil or wheat germ oil. Prepare the mixtures according to specific rules which can be found in the article “Aroma Blend Preparing Guide”.

2. Bath for body, hands, feet and shower
a) Bath blends
Application: Components of essential oils, when dissolved in water, penetrate into the blood vessels through the pores of the skin and are carried throughout the body. The molecules of essential oils penetrate into the blood stream and through the respiratory tract. Baths with essential oils are invigorating and highly effective. Bathing with the water temperature above 37C is relaxing and a stimulating effect in cool water below 37C. This method is widely used in aromatherapy.
Use for the body: The dosage in the first bath, like the first massage, should be no more than 2-3 drops essential oil to ensure no allergic reaction. Therapeutic dosage for the bath would be 6 to 10 drops oil for a maximum dosage up to 15 drops. Essential oils can be used for the bath without an emulsifier, however, it is better to use them with an emulsifier, since they have additional effects on the skin. Possible emulsifiers are: 1 tablespoon of honey, 100-200 ml of milk, kefir, cream, yoghurt or other dairy product, 1 tablespoon vegetable oil base, 1-3 tablespoons sea or table salt, or 0.5-1 kg of mud. Dissolve essential oil in the emulsifier with the resulting composition and mix with the water. The bath may be cool, warm or hot depending on desired effect. The first bath should not last more than 5-10 minutes with an optimum bath time of 15-20 minutes. To enhance the effect of the procedure lie down for 15-30 minutes after the bath. Baths can be taken every day or every other day. A treatment would consist of 15-20 baths. A course to prevent disease would be 5-10 baths once a week for 2-3 months. In the case of serious illness you should consult with your physician for permission and temperature for the tub water. Do not take hot tub baths if you have high blood pressure or high body temperature.
Use for body, hands, feet and shower: Mix 4-6 drops of essential oil or mixture in a basin or bowl in which you can immerse your hands or feet.
For a shower mix 2-5 drops of essential oil or a mixture of one half teaspoon of vegetable oil dissolved with essential oil and apply to a sponge or washcloth for washing. Gently massage your body with the cloth and shower.

b) Lotion for skin
Application: The molecules of essential oils penetrate the skin through capillaries into the bloodstream, spreading throughout the body. Locally affecting the skin. The impact and base lotion are nourishing, moisturizing, regenerating, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial. This method slowly and gradually changes the state with an impact from several minutes to several hours.
Use: There are three types of lotions depending on the type of base. Aqueous-alcoholic lotion is based on 0.5 cups of mineral water (without gas), boiled or meltwater and 1 teaspoon of alcohol or vodka added to 8-20 drops of essential oil or mixture. The aqueous lotion is based on 0.5 cups of mineral water (without gas), boiled water or meltwater added to 10-30 drops of essential oil or mixture 15 ml oil-base 5-10 drops. The number of essential oils often depends on the particular oil and the results you want to achieve. Essential oils do not dissolve or mix well with water. Shake the bottle thoroughly before each use. Lotions are mainly used as beauty treatments for the body or face. Such lotions may also impact the psycho-emotional state depending on the essential oils.

c) Enrichment of ready cosmetic means
Application: Like the use of lotions for skin provides aromatherapy effects of essential oils and cosmetic from foundation itself.
Use: Add essential oil or mixture to the base of cream, gel, mask, lotion, shampoo, conditioner, etc. When preparing a foundation for one procedure add 1-5 drops of essential oil or blend to 5-10 g of base and stir well. In the preparation of the foundation for long-term use mix 150-200 g base diluted with 10-20 drops of essential oil and stir well. Keep in a cool, dark place.

d) Compress
Application: The compress can be hot or cold. Make a wetting pad using a piece of material, bandage or small towel and place in a bowl of essential oil mixture. Squeeze the cloth out and apply to the areas to be treated, rewet as needed. The process is less intense than a message since it effects the skin and blood circulation only where the compress is placed. Weak and gradual impact. The effects can last from several minutes to several hours, depending on how long the compress is left in place. Can be used at home.
Use: Cold compress: Add 3 to 8 drops of essential oil or mixture to 200 ml of very cold, preferably ice water and apply to the affected area. You can cover the cloth with plastic wrap, or better yet use a bag of ice.
Use: Hot compress: The preparation is similar to a cold compress but hot water is used. The water should be hot but not so hot that the compress is uncomfortable on the body, Keep the compress on 20 minutes to 1 hour. Compresses are often used for headaches and nervous tension.

e) Rubbing
Application: The process of impact grinding is similar to the effects of the massage. However, since this is a local procedure, the effect is less than a massage. Fast and strongly changes the state, but with less intensity than a massage. The duration of exposure can be up to several hours. Can be used at home.
Use: Mix 1-2 tablespoons of an oil base with 8-15 drops of essential oils. The resulting composition is stirred and rubbed with intense massage movements until absorbed into the body for up to 10-15 minutes. Generally, this procedure is more superficial than a message. In the area of grinding the skin should appear warm. Particularly used in the area of localization of pain in muscles, joints and headaches.

The Basics of Aromatherapy

AROMATHERAPY USER GUIDE

If you decide to do aromatherapy, you should know and use the special rules for the use of essential oils and safety in aromatherapy.
Essential oils are made from ether-containing parts of plants and are produced by several methods: using steam, hydrocarbon gas or solvents. The method of production affects the quality of the product.
One can distinguish three levels of quality:
1. Pure essential oils
2. Cheap oil series
3. Synthetic oils
For aromatherapy it is better to buy pure essential oils, as they contain therapeutically influencing components. On the packaging of oils of good quality…

EQUIPMENT LIST AND MEASUREMENT GUIDE

Blending various essential oils increases their ability to calm and heal body and soul. Before you start using essential oils, especially in blends, it is necessary to purchase equipment and to prepare a work place.
Equipment:
1. Clean bottles made of dark glass. Commonly used are bottles of brown or indigo glass so that sunlight does not impair the quality of the essential oil or blend. Do not use plastic bottles as essential oils penetrate through the pores and evaporate. Size of bottles should be from ~ 4 ml (1/6 oz) to 240 ml (~ 8 ounces). Commonly used are bottles with a dispenser or dropper which is important for dispensing essential oils or blends.
2. Bottles for fragrance….

AROMA BLEND PREPARING GUIDE

Before you start making blends find a comfortable workplace away from sunlight in a well ventilated room so essential oils are not concentrated in the room. It is better that you work on a surface where you will not be worried about spills. Place a special plate or a thick towel on the surface before you start to catch any accidental spills. You should have easy access to hot water. Prepare equipment and material for mixing. Equipment should be washed in hot soapy water, sterilized and allow to cool and air dry….

GUIDE TO THE SELECTION OF ESSENTIAL OILS FOR BLENDS

Essential oil blends are sold premixed with a certain purpose in mind, but it is much better to prepare your own mixture. By blending your own essential oils, you can choose scents that are right for you and your family and be sure you are using all natural ingredients.
Creating an aromatic and therapeutic blend of essential oils requires specific knowledge and skills:
1. Knowledge of the properties of the essential oils for selection of ingredients (light, medium or heavy and properties of oils, e.g. bactericidal).
2. Methods of application of aromatherapy for the preparation of the mixture itself and for the choice of preparing the amount and type of substrate mixture.
3. Selection of the most appropriate base (the type of cosmetic or vegetable oil, etc.).
Methods of application and oil-fundamentals are discussed in separate articles, “AROMATHERAPY APPLICATION METHODS’ GUIDE” and “IMPORTANCE OF CARRIER OILS”, respectively. Here we will talk only about the properties of essential oils on the basis of the selected oil to the mixture. The art of blending essential oils depends on the ability to find different and complementary flavors according to the degree of volatilization and the medicinal properties or scents…

The art of blending essential oils depends on the ability to find different and complementary flavors according to the degree of volatilization and the medicinal properties or scents.

This article discusses:
1.The principles of the choice of oils in the mixture based on volatility and compatibility guidelines for groups of oils in mixtures.
2. The major effects of the oils on the psycho-emotional sphere and general physical condition of the person.
3. Grouping according to the type of influence on an individual.

Guidelines for the preparation of blends vary depending on the author. There is a general recommendation to use 3-5 essential oils for therapeutic blends (some recommend no more than 3) and 4-7 oils for perfume compositions. You can make a unique perfume for yourself that has a pleasant and therapeutic aroma. Information about the preparation of compositions for perfume is found in a separate article.

The degree of volatility of the aromatic oils are divided into three categories: light, medium and heavy. Light essential oils are basically fresh and delicate aromas. They evaporate quickly, within 20-30 minutes, and usually have antiseptic and antiviral properties. These oils can lift your mood and invigorate. Light oil cleanses and refreshes. The average base essential oil has a warm and floral aroma which constitute the middle note of the mixture and does not wear off for 30-90 minutes. They usually have soothing and regenerating properties. It’s good for treating breathing problems, headaches, spasmodic pain and can calm the nervous system. Heavy oils have deep and sweet flavors which evaporate slowly and can last from 2-3 hours to 5-6 hours. They have a strong tonic effect, improving mood and stimulating brain activity and usually have the properties of aphrodisiacs (i.e. enhance sensuality). The following table lists aromatic oils, classified by group and type of volatile oil. It is recommended to combine the oils from the same group or oil of the neighboring groups. For example, oil from groups of herbs or trees and herbs you would mix with exotic (the bottom row of the table), flower (first row of the table) or citrus (second row of the table).

Before you begin to prepare the mixture, decide on its purpose. For example, do you want a relaxing blend. Next choose the aromatic oils with those properties as the base for the composition. In this case, not to be confused with oil-based, which is the basis for a composition of essential oil that you add to the mixture in the greatest proportion. If the composition you plan to use on the skin is composed of a mixture of essential oils add it to a carrier oil, cream, water, etc. I usually prepare a mixture of essential oils in the right proportions in small quantities before adding the mixture into the oil-base, water, etc. for use.

Table 2 gives guidelines on how to make a mixture, depending on its purpose. A good mix consists of a balance of all three types of oils. This is especially important for spirits. For example, invigorating and tonic effects are most typical of light oils. In table 2, for the compositions of this mixture the maximum number of drops is indicated for the impact of the essential oils. More precise information about the effect of each specific oil on the psycho-emotional sphere of people are found in table 3 below.
Naturally, the data in table 2 combinations are advisory, not mandatory. Creativity is always welcome.

And now for the preparation:
1. Select the mixture according to the intended use. For example, lifting the mood.
2. Use the information and tables in this article to select those oils that are suitable for your purpose. It is advisable to select all three degrees of volatility for fragrances, but if not – do not worry. It is very important that you are happy with the aroma and fragrance of the blended oil. To use the mixtures for fragrances, skin care or eliminate painful problems start with one oil. If there are 3 or more oils, then you can choose two or more components by scent. Suppose there are bergamot, chamomile, lavender and rose oils.
3. Place one drop of each oil on a piece of cotton cloth or natural wool for testing (place a plate or towel under them). Place the cloth near the corresponding bottle. Smell the oil one after the other. Try to identify the characteristics of the scent of the oil. Record which oil you identified as having the most pleasant scent and will be your main component and largest proportion in the mixture. Suppose you like bergamot which had a citrus and refreshing scent. The highest proportion would be 3-4 drops.
4. Other components also can distribute the scent. For example, if you do not love chamomile since childhood – do not use! That leaves lavender and rose oil. It is more important to choose a fragrance that you don’t mind smelling all day and does not disappear. For a more long-lasting scent use a heavier oil such as 2 drops rose oil and 1 drop of lavender oil. If you don’t want the deep smell of roses prevailing in your mix, then do the opposite, use 1 drop of rose oil and 2 drops of lavender oil.

Aromatherapy Application Methods’ Guide.

Often used at home for deodorizing and disinfecting the premises and as a means to change the emotional and psychological state.

2. Oil Burner
Application: Fill the bowl to the proper level with warm water, add 2 to 8 drops of essential oil or mixture to the water and light a tea candle underneath the bowl. Check often to make sure the water is not boiling and evaporating completely. Electric oil burners are also available for this method. For the first time, use no more than 3-4 drops of essential oils, warming up to 30 minutes to ensure that you do not have an allergic reaction. The minimum dosage would be 2 drops of essential oil to 5 square meters. For example, 6 drops to a room measuring 15 square meters.

3. Cold inhalation
Application: The molecules of essential oils evaporate from the surface coming into contact with the mucous membrane of the upper respiratory tract. This method quickly and gently changes the emotional and psychological state with the association of the aroma. The impact could last from a few minutes to several hours, depending on the degree of evaporation of the essential oil or cold inhalations. The main methods are as follows:

a) Inhaling directly from the bottle
Application and use: For this method, gently pass the open bottle back and forth under your nose and sniff the active components for 2 to 7 minutes. You can do this 2 to 10 times a day. The duration of the inhalation depends on the problem and purpose of the aromatherapy course. For example, for severe depression, it is recommended to inhale for 5-7 minutes up to 10 times a day. For gentle disorders, inhale for 2-3 minutes 2-3 times a day. General course of therapy would be to use up to 21-30 days.

b) Ceramic medallion
Application and use: A terra cotta diffuser is a piece of porous clay used as the means to gently disperse essential oil into the air. To use apply 1-3 drops of essential oil or mixture onto the surface. For greater effect, bring close to the nose for inhalation. The scent should last 1-2 days.
