Aromatherapy Application Methods’ Guide. Part III. Internal use

I want to write about ingestion of essential oils. A number of sources caution against such use, but I, for example, find rose oil very helpful in solving my problems with the lability of the emotions. There are oils which are toxic and cannot be used internally. I will always include this information in the table with information about the oil. There are variations in the production of essential oil and it is highly recommended that you know the method of production of the oil, the type of plant that is used, temperatures, storage equipment, etc. The method of distillation using solvents, carbon dioxide or propylene glycol are not suitable for internal use. These would be oils like jasmine, frankincense, myrrh, etc., which could contain solvents due to the distillation method. Suitable oils are prepared by steam distillation or prepared by pressing, including many from the citrus family.
If you decide to take essential oil internally you must verify the product has been specifically labeled as safe for internal use. If you have a serious illness it is absolutely necessary to consult your physician before using essential oil internally. Women who are pregnant or nursing should not take essential oil internally. Those who suffer from arrhythmia, heart, kidney, liver or gastrointestinal disease, cannot take essential oil internally. Be sure to test for sensitivity before taking any essential oil internally.
a) A recipe with emulsifier
Application: Components of essential oils through the mucosa of the gastrointestinal tract enter the bloodstream and are carried throughout the body, affecting biochemical processes. The impact is gradual with an average degree of intensity when used with the emulsifier. Exposure to several hours. The course of treatment leads to the accumulation of the effect of essential oils. This procedure is recommended for persistent chronic psycho-neurological disorders.
Use: Essential oils that can be taken without fear are citrus, spices, mint, rosemary, chamomile, and geranium. Add 1-3 drops of essential oil to an emulsifier of 1 tablespoon of honey, a cube of refined sugar, 100-200 ml of kefir or yogurt or capsule wrapped in bread, Take 20-30 minutes before meals with a full glass of water. Course: take 1-3 times a day every day for the recommended period of 1 to 3 days or more, but not more than 21 days. During the course it is recommended to drink at least 2 liters of water per day. High dosages, up to 10 drops of treatment, must be carried out under medical supervision with periodic blood tests. A second course may be repeated after a month from last intake. No more than 6 courses of reception of essential oils internally per year.
b) Enrichment of tea
Application: This method is gradual and only slightly changes the state. The duration of exposure up to several hours. Good to drink enriched tea for decreased performance, mild forms of depression or neurosis, etc.
Use: Per 100 grams of dry tea leaves, add 10-20 drops of essential oil. Store in tightly closed glass or ceramic jar. Let stand for 7-14 days in the dark at room temperature. For greater effect, shake a few times a day for better infusion. Good oils would be peppermint and lemon, rosemary and citrus. Brewed as usual.
c) Aromatic water
Application: When administered the action of this essential oil method is only gradual and slightly changes the state. Drinking scented water can aid in correcting lung disorders.
Use: For internal use mix 0.5 liters of mineral water (without gas), or thawed purified filter water to 1-5 drops of essential oil. Before use it is mandatory to shake for 1-2 minutes. Drink in small portions 3-4 times a day. Store in the refrigerator. Shelf life: 1-2 days.

Topical methods of application of aromatherapy benefits are twofold. The essential oils are absorbed into the bloodstream, penetrating through skin and inhalation methods allow the vapor to be absorbed in the mucus membranes of the upper respiratory track. When planning topical use of citrus oils you need to keep in mind the phototoxicity of certain citrus oils.

1. Body massage, back and face
Application: Components of essential oils dissolved in an oil base penetrates the skin and the blood through the capillaries and spread throughout the body. They are absorbed into the mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract, increasing the effect of the essential oils. This treatment rapidly changes the condition and is very effective. The duration of exposure would be up to several hours. Interestingly, short-term superficial massage for 5-15 minutes is stimulating, and a long term 30 minutes deep tissue message is relaxing. Massaging the face and/or back is widely used in aromatherapy.
Use: Essential oils dissolved in a cosmetic or vegetable oil base or cream. The first massage is performed with the minimal dosage of essential oils using 10 ml of foundation to 1-3 drops of oil. You can increase the dose in the second and third sessions to 6-10 drops of all the basics for the massage throughout the session. It is best to prepare the mixture of essential oils just before the massage. You can prepare the massage base to use within a month by adding a natural preservative such as 5-10 drops of jojoba oil or wheat germ oil. Prepare the mixtures according to specific rules which can be found in the article “Aroma Blend Preparing Guide”.

2. Bath for body, hands, feet and shower
a) Bath blends
Application: Components of essential oils, when dissolved in water, penetrate into the blood vessels through the pores of the skin and are carried throughout the body. The molecules of essential oils penetrate into the blood stream and through the respiratory tract. Baths with essential oils are invigorating and highly effective. Bathing with the water temperature above 37C is relaxing and a stimulating effect in cool water below 37C. This method is widely used in aromatherapy.
Use for the body: The dosage in the first bath, like the first massage, should be no more than 2-3 drops essential oil to ensure no allergic reaction. Therapeutic dosage for the bath would be 6 to 10 drops oil for a maximum dosage up to 15 drops. Essential oils can be used for the bath without an emulsifier, however, it is better to use them with an emulsifier, since they have additional effects on the skin. Possible emulsifiers are: 1 tablespoon of honey, 100-200 ml of milk, kefir, cream, yoghurt or other dairy product, 1 tablespoon vegetable oil base, 1-3 tablespoons sea or table salt, or 0.5-1 kg of mud. Dissolve essential oil in the emulsifier with the resulting composition and mix with the water. The bath may be cool, warm or hot depending on desired effect. The first bath should not last more than 5-10 minutes with an optimum bath time of 15-20 minutes. To enhance the effect of the procedure lie down for 15-30 minutes after the bath. Baths can be taken every day or every other day. A treatment would consist of 15-20 baths. A course to prevent disease would be 5-10 baths once a week for 2-3 months. In the case of serious illness you should consult with your physician for permission and temperature for the tub water. Do not take hot tub baths if you have high blood pressure or high body temperature.
Use for body, hands, feet and shower: Mix 4-6 drops of essential oil or mixture in a basin or bowl in which you can immerse your hands or feet.
For a shower mix 2-5 drops of essential oil or a mixture of one half teaspoon of vegetable oil dissolved with essential oil and apply to a sponge or washcloth for washing. Gently massage your body with the cloth and shower.

b) Lotion for skin
Application: The molecules of essential oils penetrate the skin through capillaries into the bloodstream, spreading throughout the body. Locally affecting the skin. The impact and base lotion are nourishing, moisturizing, regenerating, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial. This method slowly and gradually changes the state with an impact from several minutes to several hours.
Use: There are three types of lotions depending on the type of base. Aqueous-alcoholic lotion is based on 0.5 cups of mineral water (without gas), boiled or meltwater and 1 teaspoon of alcohol or vodka added to 8-20 drops of essential oil or mixture. The aqueous lotion is based on 0.5 cups of mineral water (without gas), boiled water or meltwater added to 10-30 drops of essential oil or mixture 15 ml oil-base 5-10 drops. The number of essential oils often depends on the particular oil and the results you want to achieve. Essential oils do not dissolve or mix well with water. Shake the bottle thoroughly before each use. Lotions are mainly used as beauty treatments for the body or face. Such lotions may also impact the psycho-emotional state depending on the essential oils.

c) Enrichment of ready cosmetic means
Application: Like the use of lotions for skin provides aromatherapy effects of essential oils and cosmetic from foundation itself.
Use: Add essential oil or mixture to the base of cream, gel, mask, lotion, shampoo, conditioner, etc. When preparing a foundation for one procedure add 1-5 drops of essential oil or blend to 5-10 g of base and stir well. In the preparation of the foundation for long-term use mix 150-200 g base diluted with 10-20 drops of essential oil and stir well. Keep in a cool, dark place.

d) Compress
Application: The compress can be hot or cold. Make a wetting pad using a piece of material, bandage or small towel and place in a bowl of essential oil mixture. Squeeze the cloth out and apply to the areas to be treated, rewet as needed. The process is less intense than a message since it effects the skin and blood circulation only where the compress is placed. Weak and gradual impact. The effects can last from several minutes to several hours, depending on how long the compress is left in place. Can be used at home.
Use: Cold compress: Add 3 to 8 drops of essential oil or mixture to 200 ml of very cold, preferably ice water and apply to the affected area. You can cover the cloth with plastic wrap, or better yet use a bag of ice.
Use: Hot compress: The preparation is similar to a cold compress but hot water is used. The water should be hot but not so hot that the compress is uncomfortable on the body, Keep the compress on 20 minutes to 1 hour. Compresses are often used for headaches and nervous tension.

e) Rubbing
Application: The process of impact grinding is similar to the effects of the massage. However, since this is a local procedure, the effect is less than a massage. Fast and strongly changes the state, but with less intensity than a massage. The duration of exposure can be up to several hours. Can be used at home.
Use: Mix 1-2 tablespoons of an oil base with 8-15 drops of essential oils. The resulting composition is stirred and rubbed with intense massage movements until absorbed into the body for up to 10-15 minutes. Generally, this procedure is more superficial than a message. In the area of grinding the skin should appear warm. Particularly used in the area of localization of pain in muscles, joints and headaches.

OTHER ESSENTIAL OILS FOR RELAXATION

Chamomile: Soothes and suppresses negative emotions. Eases tension in the excessive desires of the ego when man tries to control everything. Provides a restful night’s sleep. A nice relaxing means for children. Promotes muscle relaxation and pain relief.

Clary sage: Calms nervous anxiety and depression, characterizing changeable mood, uncertainty, indecision and emotional confusion. Has a sedative effect. Relieves nervous and muscular tension. Improves mood, giving a feeling of well being and serenity.

Eucalyptus: Calms the nerves and strengthens the nervous system, helps with mental fatigue. Especially good for those who constantly feels constrained and limited by the environment. The oil helps to look at their situation(s) above, broaden one’s views on the prospects in life. Also good for relieve of muscular tension and pain.

Ginger: Good for those who have clear plans and good intentions, but doubts and hesitations do not allow them to implement them. I eat ginger root every day and the result is my old plans found a second birth. So highly recommend :-). Also relieves muscle tension and pain.

Grapefruit: Helps with nervous exhaustion and fatigue. Relieves depression by returning the joy of life. A few drops in the bath will cause the state of purity and renewal, improves mood. Recommended for those who have great expectations from life and when they do not come true these people have irritation, anger and accusations.

Jasmine: Stabilizer of the emotions. As a powerful aphrodisiac, improves depressed mood and relieves psychological complexes. Eliminates emotional distress and stress. Brings relief of exhaustion because of life’s problems.

Kaput: Reduces drowsiness, fatigue and muscle tension.

Lemon: Relieves drowsiness and lethargy. Clears up the mind. Invigorating. Relieves muscle tension and pain.

Mandarin: Good sedative, relieves tension, irritation and nervousness. Helps to get rid of negative emotions. Acts as an antidepressant. It is filled with joy and love. Can be used for children.

Marjoram: Relieves stress, exerting a sedative effect. Helps with intrusive thoughts, eases emotional desires and supports the ability to self-education. Promotes deep and restful sleep. Relieves muscle tension and pain.

Melissa: Recommended for those who are suffering from trauma and depression. Oil can reach the depths of the psyche (the “inner child” – the emotional essence), restoring the clarity and safety of the confused and conditioned souls. Uplifting. A good remedy for insomnia.

Neroli: Good effect for emotional stress especially anxiety or arousal. Helps calm and undisturbed sleep.

Patchouli: Oil is good for lifting the mood with nervous exhaustion, like most aphrodisiacs. Harmonizes, stabilizes and grounds the overexcited mind. Relieves anxiety, making soul peaceful and restful. Eliminates fatigue and drowsiness.

Rose: Stabilizer of emotions. Relaxes and at the same time, gives strength, instilling a sense of stability and peace. As the oil of love it heals emotional wounds. Leads to harmony of thoughts and feelings like most aphrodisiacs.

Rosemary: Relieves fatigue. Natural tonic – traditionally used for listlessness, dejection and self-doubt. Relieves mental strain and clarifies thoughts. Relieves muscle tension and pain.

Sandal: Harmonizing. Especially good when suffering from attachment(s), that is, neurotic desire of security in life. Relieves anxiety, causing a feeling of peace and tranquility in the soul.

Tea tree: Strengthens the nerves and stimulates blood flow to the brain, giving clarity of thoughts. Contributes to a more positive outlook on life.

Thyme: Good for nervous exhaustion and chronic anxiety, and for muscle(s) tension and pain.

For those who like to experiment I offer a table of oils to formulate its compositions for more specific purposes. Select one or two light, medium, and heavy oil(s) (not more than 4-5 oils totals), focusing on the more relaxing middle and/or heavy essential oil(s).

RECIPES FOR THE CARE OF THE SKIN OF THE HANDS

Our hands are constantly in motion; we are always doing something. Hands are the mirror of our age, so caring for them is important, both from the point of view of health but also aesthetic – especially for women. Essential oils can help you keep your hands looking their best. For those who work with chemically active substances, or even only with water, hand care is very important. This article provides different recipes using essential oils for the care of hands, nails and cuticles.

A. Gel hand wash
Composition:
– 300 ml of boiled water
– 120 ml of witch hazel extract
– 120 ml of glycerin soap
– 2-3 tablespoons of pectin
– 2 tablespoons honey
– 2 g borax (optional)
– 10 drops of essential oil (lavender or myrrh oil for chapped and damaged skin)
– 10 drops chamomile essential oil

A. Oil for nail care
Composition:
– 30 ml almond oil
– 2 drops of lavender oil

A. Liquid soap for cuticle care.
Composition:
– 5 ml liquid soap for the base
– 1 drop each of lemon, lavender and sandalwood oils
– 2 drops of tea tree oil if there is a fungus
Preparation:
