Methods of Application of Aromatherapy for Hair Care

Many essential oils contain natural active components that favorably affect the condition of both normal and problem hair, support or normalize the hair roots and condition the scalp, improve the hair structure, nourish the scalp and condition hair. Such means are used for preventive purposes of normal hair, for hair conditioning, and for oily hair treatment and conditioning.

METHODS OF APPLICATION

A. The addition of essential oil(s) in the shampoo, mask, conditioner, etc. in a ratio of 1-3% (15 ml basics 3-9 drops of mix of essential oils). Often used for conditioning rather than for treatment. You can also use a few drops on your hair brush to use for a natural hair conditioning as well as adding a pleasant smell to support the body, mind and spirit.

Recipes for Your Home

The use of natural and organic means is an alternative way of cleaning and caring for your home without the use of modern chemicals. Many people have never used pure essential oils to care for their home or apartment. It’s a great alternative to living a more natural and environmentally friendly life.

Deodorizing indoor air
There are many ways to deodorize the air in a room. For example, with a candle diffuser or electric ring on a lamp. This method allows the essential oil to heat and evaporate into the air to deodorize and refresh the room. Remember to be very careful when using these devices and most importantly, remember that all essential oils are flammable to varying degrees.
Any essential oil that will not cause an allergic reaction is good depending on the purpose of deodorizing. Essential oil of sweet orange, bergamot, geranium, grapefruit, ylang-ylang, cedar, lavender, frankincense, lemon, lemongrass, pine, juniper, rosemary, and eucalyptus are recommended.
Essential oil suitable as an insect repellent are lemongrass, lemon balm, citronella, tea tree, and eucalyptus.
Oils suitable for use in the bedroom are geranium, lavender, mandarin, melissa, neroli, and rose. For a more relaxing mood use oil of clary sage or marjoram.
Essential oils especially good for a romantic dinner and aphrodisiac use oils of geranium, jasmine, ylang-ylang, lavender, patchouli, rose, sandalwood, or clary sage.
For a gala dinner essential oils of conifers such as spruce, cedar, juniper, fir, pine, clove, cinnamon, incense, myrrh, and peppermint, or any essential oil reminiscent of the joys of the holiday would be a very good choice. For example, the aroma of pine for the New Year.
For improvement of brain activity (for example, working at the computer) the best essential oils would be lemon, rosemary, and basil. In particular, lemon essential oil helps to increase productivity. Rosemary helps concentration. Basil stimulates the stressed out brain. If processed, you can use oil of juniperor clary sage, but only in small amounts. Large amount can cause drowsiness.
For kids, the smell of sweet orange and mandarin. For the baby use lavender. Remember for children the dose should be much smaller.

Disinfecting the premises
When you have a cold or flu, disinfecting the room can be done with benzoin, bergamot, lavender, lemon, juniper, thyme, pine, tea tree, or eucalyptus. Dissolve 3-5 drops of the chosen essential oil in water. To disinfect surfaces in the kitchen or the bathroom wipe the surfaces with a cloth soaked in the desired mixture.
There is a whole list of natural tools that you can use for cleaning and disinfection of surfaces: baking soda (a cleaner add 4 tablespoons of baking soda in one liter of warm water; add vinegar, borax (a cleaner – add half a cup of borax to 3-3.5 liters of hot water; add juice or lemon essential oil), lemon (cleaning and bleaching the kitchen surfaces), salt, vinegar and sodium thiophosphate. For example, to control cockroaches, use a sugar with the addition of borax.

Washing dishes
Lemon is a great antiseptic. To add a pleasant citrus smell or to disinfect the dishes add 5-7 drops of essential oil of lemon or juice of half a lemon to dishwashing detergent. If you use the dishwasher, it is better to use lemon juice rather than the oil. A word of caution, some plastics have a tendency to absorb the essential oils.
An excellent tool for washing dishes is vinegar (5% acetic acid), especially with the added lemon essential oil. 30 ml or 3 tablespoons of vinegar added to 10-15 drops of essential lemon oil added to water for washing dishes or with 500-600 ml dishwashing detergent use only essential lemon oil.

Cleaning floors
For cleaning floors, we recommend the following essential oils: sweet orange, lavender, lemon, patchouli, pine, rosemary, and eucalyptus. The choice depends on the purpose. For example, if there is a sick person in the home, eucalyptus or pine are good additions to the usual disinfectant for the air, etc. For cleaning floors, it is recommended to add 20 drops of the chosen essential oil to 8 liters of water.

Cleansing carpets
To cleanse and freshen carpets or rugs the recommend essential oils to choose from are of sweet orange, lavender, rosewood, and cinnamon. It is best to use handmade cleaners. For a carpet cleaner: add 25 drops of the chosen essential oil to 500 ml of borax. Mix thoroughly to prevent the oil from forming clumps. Sprinkle the mixture on carpet or rug with a spoon or straight from the container. Let sit for at least 15 minutes and vacuum up. Borax is highly soluble in water, so if you prefer use an aqueous solution. This mixture is safe to use around pets. It is not meant to be ingested so do not allow your pet to lick the mixture while on the carpet or rug.

Washing and drying linens
For linens use essential oils of sweet orange, bergamot, grapefruit, lavender, lemon, or eucalyptus. Essential oil can be added to the last rinse when drying naturally. To rinse linens, mix 5-7 drops of the chosen essential oil in 25 liters of water. This is not recommended when using a dryer. You can also make your own dryer sheet by adding 7-10 drops of essential oil on a piece of cloth and place in the dryer along with the laundry.

Guide to the Selection of Essential Oils for Blends

Essential oil blends are sold premixed with a certain purpose in mind, but it is much better to prepare your own mixture. By blending your own essential oils, you can choose scents that are right for you and your family and be sure you are using all natural ingredients.

Creating an aromatic and therapeutic blend of essential oils requires specific knowledge and skills:
1. Knowledge of the properties of the essential oils for selection of ingredients (light, medium or heavy and properties of oils, e.g. bactericidal).
2. Methods of application of aromatherapy for the preparation of the mixture itself and for the choice of preparing the amount and type of substrate mixture.
3. Selection of the most appropriate base (the type of cosmetic or vegetable oil, etc.).

Methods of application and oil-fundamentals are discussed in separate articles, “AROMATHERAPY APPLICATION METHODS’ GUIDE” and “IMPORTANCE OF CARRIER OILS”, respectively. Here we will talk only about the properties of essential oils on the basis of the selected oil to the mixture. The art of blending essential oils depends on the ability to find different and complementary flavors according to the degree of volatilization and the medicinal properties or scents.

This article discusses:
1.The principles of the choice of oils in the mixture based on volatility and compatibility guidelines for groups of oils in mixtures.
2. The major effects of the oils on the psycho-emotional sphere and general physical condition of the person.
3. Grouping according to the type of influence on an individual.

Guidelines for the preparation of blends vary depending on the author. There is a general recommendation to use 3-5 essential oils for therapeutic blends (some recommend no more than 3) and 4-7 oils for perfume compositions. You can make a unique perfume for yourself that has a pleasant and therapeutic aroma. Information about the preparation of compositions for perfume is found in a separate article.

The degree of volatility of the aromatic oils are divided into three categories: light, medium and heavy. Light essential oils are basically fresh and delicate aromas. They evaporate quickly, within 20-30 minutes, and usually have antiseptic and antiviral properties. These oils can lift your mood and invigorate. Light oil cleanses and refreshes. The average base essential oil has a warm and floral aroma which constitute the middle note of the mixture and does not wear off for 30-90 minutes. They usually have soothing and regenerating properties. It’s good for treating breathing problems, headaches, spasmodic pain and can calm the nervous system. Heavy oils have deep and sweet flavors which evaporate slowly and can last from 2-3 hours to 5-6 hours. They have a strong tonic effect, improving mood and stimulating brain activity and usually have the properties of aphrodisiacs (i.e. enhance sensuality). The following table lists aromatic oils, classified by group and type of volatile oil. It is recommended to combine the oils from the same group or oil of the neighboring groups. For example, oil from groups of herbs or trees and herbs you would mix with exotic (the bottom row of the table), flower (first row of the table) or citrus (second row of the table).

Before you begin to prepare the mixture, decide on its purpose. For example, do you want a relaxing blend. Next choose the aromatic oils with those properties as the base for the composition. In this case, not to be confused with oil-based, which is the basis for a composition of essential oil that you add to the mixture in the greatest proportion. If the composition you plan to use on the skin is composed of a mixture of essential oils add it to a carrier oil, cream, water, etc. I usually prepare a mixture of essential oils in the right proportions in small quantities before adding the mixture into the oil-base, water, etc. for use.

Table 2 gives guidelines on how to make a mixture, depending on its purpose. A good mix consists of a balance of all three types of oils. This is especially important for spirits. For example, invigorating and tonic effects are most typical of light oils. In table 2, for the compositions of this mixture the maximum number of drops is indicated for the impact of the essential oils. More precise information about the effect of each specific oil on the psycho-emotional sphere of people are found in table 3 below.
Naturally, the data in table 2 combinations are advisory, not mandatory. Creativity is always welcome.

Table 2. The approximate proportions of oils depend on the purpose of the mixture.

Freshness 5 drops 4 drops 1 drop
Relaxation 1 drop 6 drops 3 drops
Sensuality 1 drop 4 drops 5 drops

And now for the preparation:
1. Select the mixture according to the intended use. For example, lifting the mood.
2. Use the information and tables in this article to select those oils that are suitable for your purpose. It is advisable to select all three degrees of volatility for fragrances, but if not – do not worry. It is very important that you are happy with the aroma and fragrance of the blended oil. To use the mixtures for fragrances, skin care or eliminate painful problems start with one oil. If there are 3 or more oils, then you can choose two or more components by scent. Suppose there are bergamot, chamomile, lavender and rose oils.
3. Place one drop of each oil on a piece of cotton cloth or natural wool for testing (place a plate or towel under them). Place the cloth near the corresponding bottle. Smell the oil one after the other. Try to identify the characteristics of the scent of the oil. Record which oil you identified as having the most pleasant scent and will be your main component and largest proportion in the mixture. Suppose you like bergamot which had a citrus and refreshing scent. The highest proportion would be 3-4 drops.
4. Other components also can distribute the scent. For example, if you do not love chamomile since childhood – do not use! That leaves lavender and rose oil. It is more important to choose a fragrance that you don’t mind smelling all day and does not disappear. For a more long-lasting scent use a heavier oil such as 2 drops rose oil and 1 drop of lavender oil. If you don’t want the deep smell of roses prevailing in your mix, then do the opposite, use 1 drop of rose oil and 2 drops of lavender oil.
